Games for couples to play at home without anything: 20 funny, romantic and flirty games for two that need no cards, dice or board. Just you two.

Couples GamesDate NightRelationships

The easiest games for couples to play at home without anything are talking games like Two Truths and a Lie, Would You Rather and 20 Questions, word games like Fortunately Unfortunately and the Alphabet Game, and physical ones like thumb war, the mirror game and trace a word. All 20 below need nothing but the two of you: no cards, no dice, no board, no shopping. Each one has the rules in a few lines, and they are grouped by the mood you are in.

Card titled Couple games with nothing, listing eight games that need no props: Two truths and a lie, Would you rather, Fortunately unfortunately, The alphabet game, Thumb war, The mirror game, Trace a word, Compliment battle
Eight of the twenty. No cards, no dice, no phone needed for any of them.

Talking games for two

1. Two Truths and a Lie

Say three things about yourself; one is false. Your partner guesses the lie. Rule for couples: only stories they have never heard.

2. Would You Rather

Take turns asking. “Would you rather we move to the beach or the mountains?” The follow-up “why?” is where the real conversation is.

3. Never Have I Ever, for two

Hold up five fingers each. Say something you have never done; if your partner has, they put a finger down. First to zero loses. Our spicy Never Have I Ever questions are there if you want help.

4. 20 Questions

Think of a person, place or thing. Your partner gets twenty yes-or-no questions to guess it. Use people you both know to make it harder.

5. Truth or Dare

No cards needed: make them up as you go. For ideas when you get stuck, keep our truth or dare questions for couples open.

6. This or That, quick-fire

Rapid choices with no thinking time: coffee or tea, morning or night, call or text. Three seconds per answer, or you lose the round.

Word games couples can play anywhere

7. Fortunately, Unfortunately

Tell a story one sentence each. One of you starts every sentence with “Fortunately,” the other with “Unfortunately.” It turns absurd within a minute.

8. One-word story

Build a story one word at a time, alternating. The first to laugh or hesitate starts the next one.

9. The Alphabet Game

Pick a category (foods, films, places you have been together) and go A to Z, alternating letters. Miss one and you are out.

10. I Went to Market

“I went to market and bought an apple.” The next adds a B: “an apple and a banana.” Each turn repeats the whole list. A memory test that gets very silly by M.

11. Categories

Name a category and trade answers back and forth (“dog breeds,” “songs with a colour in the title”). First to repeat one or stall for five seconds loses.

Physical games with no props

12. Rock paper scissors with stakes

Best of five. The loser does the dishes, picks the film you hate, or gives a two-minute shoulder rub.

13. Thumb war

Hook fingers, “one, two, three, four, I declare a thumb war,” and pin your partner’s thumb for three seconds.

14. Staring contest

Eyes locked, no blinking, no laughing. Harder with someone you love than with anyone else.

15. Charades for two

Think of a film, song or shared memory and act it out. Your partner has one minute to guess. Swap.

16. The mirror game

Face each other. One leads with slow movements, the other mirrors them exactly. Swap leaders without saying so and see who notices first.

17. The floor is lava

Get from the sofa to the kitchen without touching the floor, using cushions and furniture. Childish, and that is the point.

18. Trace a word

Write a word on your partner’s back with your fingertip. They get three guesses. Start innocent; finish with a hint about later.

19. Compliment battle

Take turns giving each other a specific compliment. No repeats, no generic ones (“you’re nice” does not count). First to hesitate loses, and both of you win.

20. Hot and cold kisses

One closes their eyes. The other says “warmer” or “colder” as they move toward a kiss on a spot they have picked. Find it, and you can claim it.

If you have your phone

“Without anything” usually still means a phone on the sofa. Three free ways to get more out of it:

  • Silence Break plays truth or touch on one phone: pick a mood from cute and fun to passion, then answer the question or take the touch. Nothing explicit on screen.
  • Dirty dice online rolls an action and a body part for adult couples, free in the browser. The Dirty Dice app adds 14 decks and a mode to play from two phones.
  • Truth or dare for couples online writes each card to your partner by name.

If you want to plan a full evening around these, our date night games for couples at home pairs them with a few that need a deck of cards or the kitchen.
