Is AirDrop Discontinued? No, and Here Is Where the Rumour Came From
AirDrop is not discontinued. It is on every iPhone, iPad and Mac in 2026. Why people think it was dropped, what changed in iOS 16.2, and what to use instead.
No, AirDrop is not discontinued. It is built into every iPhone, iPad and Mac sold in 2026 and Apple has never announced plans to remove it. The rumour comes from a real change: in iOS 16.2 (December 2022) Apple limited the "Everyone" setting to 10 minutes, after which AirDrop goes back to "Contacts Only". People who could no longer be found by strangers assumed it had been switched off. The other source of confusion is the word itself: a search for "airdrop discontinued" mostly returns news about crypto token airdrops and game mods, not Apple's feature.
Is AirDrop discontinued?
No. AirDrop shipped with iOS 7 and OS X Lion and has been in every release since, including iOS 26 and macOS 26. Apple has changed how it behaves a few times, but it has never been pulled, deprecated or made a paid feature. If AirDrop seems to have vanished from your phone, it is a setting or a connection problem, not a product decision. The checklist at the end of this post covers the usual fixes.
Why people think AirDrop was discontinued
The 10-minute "Everyone" limit
Before iOS 16.2, you could set AirDrop to "Everyone" and leave it there, so any iPhone nearby could send you a file. From December 2022 the option became Everyone for 10 Minutes. After ten minutes the phone quietly switches back to Contacts Only. Someone who used to receive photos from friends at a party, or from a client not in their contacts, suddenly found nothing arrived. The limit reached every country with iOS 16.2, so many users noticed it at the same time and assumed AirDrop was being wound down.
The name confusion
"Airdrop" is also the word crypto projects use for giving away free tokens, and the word game communities use for supply drops and mods. Those really do get discontinued, with headlines that say so. Search for "airdrop discontinued" after your iPhone stops showing up and the results look like confirmation. They are about something else entirely.
Does AirDrop still exist on iPhone and Mac?
Yes, on every current device. On an iPhone or iPad, AirDrop is the first option in the share sheet; the setting lives at Settings › General › AirDrop, with Receiving Off, Contacts Only and Everyone for 10 Minutes. On a Mac, it is in the Finder sidebar, in every share menu and in Control Centre. iOS 17 added NameDrop and the ability to finish a transfer over the internet if you walk out of range: additions to AirDrop, not replacements.
Is AirDrop coming to Android and Windows?
Android, partly. Google added AirDrop interoperability to Quick Share on its Pixel 10 phones in late 2025, and in 2026 Samsung Galaxy S26 phones gained the same ability. With the iPhone set to Everyone for 10 Minutes, a Galaxy S26 or Pixel 10 can send a file to an iPhone, iPad or Mac through Quick Share, and receive one back. Older Android phones cannot. How Quick Share fits with Macs is covered in Quick Share on Mac.
Windows, no. Apple has never made AirDrop for Windows, Quick Share for Windows does not include the AirDrop bridge, and there is no sign of either changing. The full list of what actually works is in AirDrop for Windows and Android.
What to use when AirDrop is not an option
- A local Wi-Fi app on both devices. Beam is our app for exactly this gap: it runs on Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android, finds your other devices on the Wi-Fi you are already on, and sends the original file straight across with no account, no cloud and no cable. Transfers are encrypted end to end, every file is checked against a SHA-256 hash before it is saved, and an interrupted transfer resumes where it stopped. LocalSend is the open-source alternative.
- Quick Share. Built into Android, with a Windows app from Google. Between Android and Windows it is the obvious pick.
- A cable. Still the fastest way to move a whole camera roll. See how to AirDrop from iPhone to Windows for the cable and browser routes step by step.
AirDrop not working checklist
- Check the receiving setting. Settings › General › AirDrop. If the sender is not in your contacts, choose Everyone for 10 Minutes and send within that window.
- Wi-Fi and Bluetooth both on, on both devices. AirDrop needs both, even if you are not connected to a network.
- Unlock the receiving device and keep it awake.
- On a Mac, check the firewall. System Settings › Network › Firewall › Options: "Block all incoming connections" must be off.
- Toggle Airplane Mode on and off, or restart both devices.
Common questions
Did Apple remove AirDrop?
No. AirDrop is on every current iPhone, iPad and Mac. Apple only limited the Everyone setting to 10 minutes in iOS 16.2.
Why did AirDrop stop showing Everyone?
Since December 2022 the option is Everyone for 10 Minutes. After that it reverts to Contacts Only, so you need to turn it on again each time.
Is AirDrop going away in iOS 26?
No. iOS 26 and macOS 26 both include AirDrop unchanged.
Can Android phones AirDrop now?
Only the newest Pixel and Samsung Galaxy S26 models, through Quick Share, and only when the iPhone is set to Everyone for 10 Minutes. Other Android phones need a cross-platform app.
Is there AirDrop for Windows 11?
No, and none is planned. Use a local sharing app such as Beam or LocalSend on both devices.
The short version
AirDrop is not discontinued. The 10-minute Everyone limit from iOS 16.2 and the crypto meaning of the word started the rumour. It works on every Apple device, reaches a few Android phones through Quick Share, and does not exist on Windows. For anything outside Apple's world, use Beam, Quick Share or a cable.
