Common questions
The first transcription is slow
The first time, your browser downloads the speech model: about 80 to 150 MB for Fast and 250 to 490 MB for Accurate, depending on your device. It is cached afterwards, so later files start straight away. The transcription itself runs on your device, so a recent computer with WebGPU (current Chrome or Edge) is much faster than an older one on the CPU.
It says “Transcription failed on this device”
The model ran out of memory or the graphics driver refused it. Switch to the Fast model, close other heavy tabs, or try a shorter file. If it keeps failing, try Chrome or Edge, or a different computer. A phone browser can handle short clips; for long recordings on a phone, the Voice Recorder app transcribes on the phone itself.
The transcript is in the wrong language
Auto-detect listens to the first 30 seconds. If the recording starts with music, silence or a different language, pick the language yourself under Language before you add the file.
Fast or Accurate?
Fast (Whisper Base) is fine for one clear speaker in English. Accurate (Whisper Small) handles accents, noise, several speakers and other languages better, but downloads more and takes longer.
Which files work?
Anything your browser can play: MP3, M4A, WAV, OGG, OPUS, FLAC, AAC, WebM, MP4 and MOV. For a video, only the sound is transcribed. Very long files need more memory; if a two-hour file fails, split it into parts.
How do I make subtitles?
Add the video, wait for the transcript, then press .srt. The file has a timestamp for every line, and YouTube, Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve and CapCut import it directly.
Recording from the microphone
Press Record and allow the microphone when your browser asks. If nothing happens, the permission was blocked earlier: open the site settings for transcribe.riekapps.com in your browser and allow the microphone again.
Is my audio uploaded?
No. The file is decoded and transcribed inside your browser tab. Only the model files are downloaded. Close the tab and the audio and transcript are gone, so copy or download the text you want to keep.
Report a problem
Write to riekapps@gmail.com with your browser, your device and how long the file was. Do not send the recording unless you are happy to; we never see it otherwise.
Transcribe is free, with no account, and your audio never leaves your device. See the Privacy Policy and Terms of Use. For the phone app, see Voice Recorder support.
