The speed reads 0, or the GPS chip says “No signal”
GPS needs a view of the sky. Indoors, in a basement car park or between tall buildings, your phone may never get a fix. Step outside and give it up to a minute for a cold start. Check that Location is on in your phone’s settings and that Speedometer has permission set to “Allow all the time” or “While using the app”. Battery saver can also throttle location updates on some phones.
The speed is slightly different from my car’s dashboard
That is normal and expected. Car speedometers are legally required to never under-read, so most read a few percent high on purpose. GPS measures your actual movement over the ground and is usually the more accurate of the two. Speedometer is not a legal replacement for your vehicle’s own speedometer — treat it as a very good second opinion.
Speed jumps around, or lags behind
GPS accuracy drops under trees, in tunnels, near tall buildings and in heavy rain. The app smooths the reading so the needle does not twitch, which costs a fraction of a second of response. Watch the GPS chip at the top: when it reports a weak fix, the number is a best guess. Under a tunnel there is no signal at all and the reading will hold, then correct itself when you come out.
My trip stopped recording when I locked the screen
It should not. Tapping START begins a foreground location service that keeps recording with the screen off, and you will see a notification for as long as it runs. If recordings are being cut short, your phone is probably killing the app to save battery — this is common on Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, Realme and Samsung. In your phone’s settings find Battery, then Speedometer, and set it to Unrestricted or Do not optimise.
The speed-limit alert did not fire
The limit is set per vehicle, so a limit you set for Car does not apply while you are in Motorcycle mode. Check the vehicle selector on the dashboard, then Settings → Speed limit for that vehicle. Also confirm that Speed warning is on, and that the sound and vibration switches are on if you expect to hear or feel it.
How does HUD mode work?
On the Digital tab, switch to HUD to mirror the digits left-to-right. Lay the phone flat on your dashboard at night and the display reflects the right way round in your windshield. It works best on a dark road with a clean windscreen, and works badly in daylight. HUD is a Pro feature with 3 free trials.
The map is blank or tiles will not load
The map needs an internet connection — it is the one part of the app that does. Everything else, including the speedometer and trip recording, works fully offline. If you have signal and the map is still blank, close and reopen the app; tiles are fetched fresh from OpenStreetMap.
Restore Speedometer Pro
Open the paywall from the lock icon or the Pro banner in Settings and choose Restore purchases, signed in to the same Google or Apple account that made the original purchase. Pro is a one-time purchase, not a subscription, so there is nothing to renew or cancel.
Does it drain my battery?
Continuous GPS is one of the more demanding things a phone does, so a long recorded trip will use noticeably more battery than an idle phone. Keeping the screen on adds to that. On a long drive, use a charger. The app only holds GPS open while a trip is recording or the dashboard is open.
