Common questions
It says no subject was found
The model looks for a clear subject — a person, an animal, an object — that stands apart from what is behind it. It gives up on photos where nothing stands out: a landscape, a flat pattern, a subject that fills the whole frame or one that is the same tone as its background. Try a photo where the subject is in the middle third and the background is visibly different, and crop away distractions first if you can. On Android, if it fails on every photo, the model probably has not finished downloading — see the “Preparing” question below.
The edges on hair or glass look rough
Fine hair, fur, glass and anything transparent or reflective are the hardest things for any cutout model, and a busy background makes them harder still. Drag the soft-edge slider up: it feathers the boundary so stray strands blend into the new background instead of standing out as a hard line. A plain or blurred background behind the cutout hides more than a bold colour does. If the photo itself is soft or small, there is not much edge to recover — a sharper, larger original gives a cleaner cut.
The first run on Android says “Preparing”
On Android the segmentation model is downloaded once by Google Play services the first time you cut out a photo. It needs an internet connection for that one download and needs Google Play services on the phone; after that the app works offline. If “Preparing” never finishes, check the connection and that Google Play services is installed and up to date. On a phone without Play services — some Huawei models, some custom ROMs — the app cannot fetch the model; use the website at bgremover.riekapps.com instead, which runs the model in your browser.
It will not install on my iPhone
BG Remover uses Apple’s built-in subject lift, which arrived in iOS 17. The app needs iOS 17 or later, so it will not appear in the App Store on an older iPhone or iPad. If your device cannot update, the website works in Safari on any recent iOS.
Saving asks for Photos permission
To write the cutout into your library the app needs add-only access to Photos, which is the narrowest permission the system offers: it can add the image and cannot read or delete anything else. If you tapped “Don’t allow” earlier, turn it back on in your phone’s Settings under BG Remover → Photos. Saved images land in an album called “BG Remover” so you can find them in one place.
What does Copy do?
Copy puts the cutout on the clipboard as a transparent PNG. Paste it straight into a message, a note, a document or a design app and it arrives with its transparent background intact — no saving, no file to hunt for. If you have chosen a colour, blur or photo background, that is what gets copied instead.
Sending a photo into BG Remover from another app
Open a photo in Photos, Chrome, WhatsApp or almost any app, tap Share and choose BG Remover in the share sheet. The image is handed to the app on the phone and the cutout starts at once. You can also copy an image in another app and tap Paste in BG Remover. Nothing about that hand-off leaves the phone.
How large can the photo be?
The cutout is made at full resolution up to 4096 pixels on the longest side on iPhone and 3072 pixels on Android; a larger photo is scaled to that limit before it is cut, which still comfortably covers a phone camera shot. The website works at the photo’s full size, limited only by your browser’s memory, so for a very large image the website is the place to go.
Deleting cutouts from the app
The app keeps your recent cutouts — up to 40 — so you can come back and re-style them. Swipe or long-press one to delete it, or use Settings → Delete all cutouts to clear the lot. Uninstalling the app removes them too. Images you have already saved to Photos are separate and stay in your library.
Report a problem
Write to riekapps@gmail.com and mention your phone model and OS version, or the browser if you were on the website. For a cutout that went wrong, a description of the photo — what the subject was, what was behind it — helps most; send the photo only if you are happy to, since we never see it otherwise.
